So, you’ve decided to visit Machu Picchu? That’s excellent. It’s one of the most breathtaking regions to visit and can be the ultimate travel destination. However, planning the trip can be a little overwhelming. Below we’ll look at some things you may not know about visiting Machu Picchu that might make planning simpler.
Choice of Transportation
You can get to Machu Picchu in three ways. You can take a train. You can take a bus. Or you can hike there. If you choose to use a train, look for PeruRail and Inca Rail. These both take you to the closest town near Machu Picchu. If you prefer to hike, there are various hikes to choose from. The Inca Trail is the most popular, and it takes about four days and three nights travel. Make sure to get in with one of the Machu Picchu hiking tours if you choose this option. You can also take the bus from the Hidroelectrica into the closest town, Aguas Calientes.
Want to show off your journey when you head back home? There is a table when you exit the gates of Machu Picchu where you can have your passport stamped. Sometimes an employee will do it for you, while other times you may be able to do it on your own.
When entering Machu Picchu, there are four types of entrances available. These include a ticket for only Machu Picchu, one for Machu Picchu and the museum, one for Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu, and one for Machu Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain. If you want to visit Huayna Picchu, purchase tickets in advance as they sell out quickly.
You may not realize it, but there are employees posted all over Machu Picchu. If you plan to step off the beaten path, be aware that someone may see you and approach you about it. It’s definitely a better idea to stick to the tour areas and enjoy it for what it is.
Pack Your Snacks
Once you step through the gates into Machu Picchu, there is nowhere to purchase a snack or a drink. There are also no bathrooms, so be sure you use one beforehand. There is a bathroom at the gates, but you’ll need to provide a Peruvian Nuevo Sol to use it.
You could choose to stay at a hotel at Machu Picchu but be prepared to spend some money. The hotel is called the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, and it costs well over a thousand dollars a night. However, it also has all the amenities you can imagine, so if you have some extra money, it may be worth it.
